Welcome, welcome, welcome!!! To the first column of 2005.

It's very good to be back with you again and I look forward to a great year with my subscribers to Parents and Teens. We have lots of great things in the latest Ezine so make yourself some coffee, put your feet up and enjoy a good read!

So a new year, I wonder how many of you have made New Year Resolutions and if you did how you are doing with them? Maybe you decided to lose some weight……are you still managing to resist those ‘oh so tempting' cookies??

Maybe you decided to get fit…did you join a gym only to find that already your good resolve is waning?

It's all too easy to have good intentions but not always so easy to follow through. Most of you reading this newsletter will be parents. We expect great things of our children don't we?! We expect them to work hard at school, get good grades, keep a tidy room, have a great attitude, avoid certain things…maybe drugs, smoking, alcohol, sex, we expect them to help around the house, choose their friends wisely….HOLD ON!!! I could go on forever of course!

The point I am trying to make is that in an effort to shape our young people into fine, upstanding adults of the future we sometimes place almost unreasonable demands on them, we are almost setting them up for failure. If we, as adults cannot even reach the end of January in keeping the resolutions we made in good faith on January 1st, then how can we expect our young people to always, without fail follow through on what is expected of them?

It's important to put ourselves in the shoes of our teenagers and remind ourselves what it was like to be a teenager, you may even remember some of the phrases your parents said to you…. I bet you sometimes find yourself using the same lines with your own kids??!!

Why not make another New Year resolution? To meet your Teen right where they are, reach out to them and acknowledge them for the wonderful, awesome young people they are, appreciating all the wonderful qualities they have (most passed on by you!! Pat yourself on the back!!).

Once you've done that, then and only then can you start to work on the stuff that needs fixing………but that's for another time!
